Darlene Joy Denson-Simmons, a vibrant soul who touched the lives of many, passed away on November 19 at the age of 65. Born on January 28, 1958, in New York City, Darlene was the second child of Betty and Oliver Denson. She grew up in the Red Hook Housing Development in Brooklyn and attended New York City public schools. Following her graduation, she continued her education at Kingsborough Community College.
Darlene’s love for fashion and style was evident throughout her life. Wherever she worked in the corporate world, she always made a grand entrance, dressed to impress with impeccable taste. In 1988, she married her beloved husband, Winslow T. Simmons, on July 16. Together, they were blessed with five children, who were the center of Darlene’s universe.
Darlene’s passion for life extended beyond her family. She was known as the “Juice Queen,” following in her mother’s footsteps by making delicious and beautifully presented fresh juices and raw foods. Her creativity extended to other areas as well, as she and Winslow partnered to establish Excellence Winz, a successful event decorating business that transformed weddings, birthday parties, and other special occasions into unforgettable experiences.
In 2016, Darlene experienced the heartbreak of losing her husband, Winslow. Through her faith and unwavering strength, she found her way as a prayer warrior, offering comfort and support to those around her. When her mother became ill in 2017, Darlene devoted herself to being her mother’s caretaker, demonstrating her unwavering love and compassion.
Darlene is predeceased by her husband, Winslow Simmons; her parents, Betty and Oliver Denson; brother, Warren Denson (Jiutane); niece, Danaya Smith (Christopher); nephew, Wade Denson; in-laws, Roseline and Joseph Simmons; and brother-in-law, Vincent Simmons.
Cherished memories of Darlene will forever be held by her children, Winslow Simmons, Gwen Simmons (formerly known as Owen Simmons), Israel Simmons (Katie), Nia Simmons-Vanhook (Brian), Naomi Simmons, & Janelle Middleton (Herbert); grandchild, Nyssa Simmons; sister, Regina Ferguson (Robert); godchildren, Candace Frieson & Paul Frieson; sister-in-law, Roslyn James (Cecil); brothers-in-law, Davie Simmons (Simone) & Ronald Simmons; and a multitude of cousins and friends. The family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love and support they have received during this difficult time.
Darlene will truly be missed, but her infectious zest for life, her creative spirit, and her unwavering love will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
