Lewis Paul Nemeth, born February 22nd, 1942 in Norfolk, VA to Stephan J Nemeth Jr and Regina Quirk Nemeth passed away at home peacefully on December 13th, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth “Taffy” Nemeth and children David Paul and wife Marian Hederson with son Gunnar Henderson-Nemeth (26), Kevin John with son Garrett Fookes (33)and his daughter Amelia, Lydia Nemeth Odell and husband Arthur Odell with son Brady David Odell (17), and John Brady and wife Tammy Baker Nemeth with daughters Lillian Piper (10) and Zoey Elizabeth (10). Also survived by his sister, Regina Nemeth Teofrio and brother Terence W Nemeth. Stephan J Nemeth III predeceased.
Paul grew up in Port Jefferson Station, NY and was very active in his athletic life with many accolades including co-captain of the Suffolk County winning football team at Port Jefferson High School. He went on to attend St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, PA. Then he married his high school sweetheart, Taffy on January 27th, 1962. Paul and Taffy began to grow their family in Port Jefferson, but soon found their way to Newtown, PA where Paul worked in the window business and enjoyed volunteering with his older sons in the Boy Scouts. Eventually, the family landed in Wilmington, DE where Paul worked in the window business, real estate, retail and finally, his dream job of coaching at Wilmington Friends.
Nothing brightened up Paul’s day like time with his grandchildren: watching Lily and Zoey play, having a good talk with Gunnar or listening to Brady play his guitar. All things he was able to enjoy one last time just days before passing. Paul found a love of running later in life. So much so that he pushed himself to run marathons where he completed his last Boston Marathon at age 72 (one of at least 10 marathons including Philadelphia, Delaware, DC and New York City). Paul also enjoyed live music, particularly attending Phish shows with his children. He traveled to northern Maine, North Carolina and the Everglades to have these great experiences. Paul also loved his vacation time. Trips to Ocean City, NJ, Naples, FL, Brevard, NC, France and a wonderful cruise with Taffy in Alaska.
Paul really found his passion when he began coaching Cross Country at Wilmington Friends School. While there, he grew the program from a few kids to nearly 40 his last season where they won the State Championship in 2019. The bonds he built with those runners were truly special. So special that he let his coaching creep into winter track & field as well as spring track and field.
Paul was a special person with a loving spirit to all that let him in their life. As long as you were happy, Paul was happy. Waiting to give a hug and a huge smile with that mustache.
A celebration of life will be held at Wilmington Friends Lower School Meeting Room at 11am, Sunday, January 14th, 2024. 101 School Rd, Wilmington, DE 19803.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wilmington Friends School in his name where we are planning a memorial fund in his memory. To donate click on this link - https://www.wilmingtonfriends.org/support/donate
