Obituary

Mary Monica Ifill

July 2, 1937 - July 29, 2020

Our beautiful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend Mary Monica Ifill of Newark, DE and formerly of Pelham, NY, passed away peacefully, due to late stage dementia on July 29, 2020, she was 83.

The sixth of nine children, Mary, was born on July 2, 1937, in the Parish of St. Michael, Barbados to the parents of the late Gordon L. Ifill and Annie Ifill (Browne). Later, her family moved to Newbury, St. George, where she grew up.

Mary left Barbados in 1961 to work as a domestic in Montreal, Canada, then later moved to NY and resided in Pelham, NY, with her late husband, Charles A. Speede. In 2009, she retired as a caregiver.

Mary will always be remembered for her bright smile, kind eyes, and the care to help others. Her real calling was her love for gardening and was the envy on the block with her beautiful garden. A fashionista, too, she loved to dress up, shop, and hunt for bargains. She enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City, the Caribbean, Las Vegas, and Switzerland. She was also a member of The Church of St. Simon the Cyrenian, New Rochelle, NY.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Black-Speede of Newark, DE; brothers, Dr. Gordon Ifill of Hilton Head, SC, Colin Ifill of Kingston, Jamaica, Edwin Ifill of St. George, Barbados; sisters, Sheila Ifill of St. George, Barbados, and Shirley Ifill Turner of Teaneck, NJ; grandchild, Brandon Black-Speede of Newark, DE, son-in-law Andrew Black-Speede, of Newark, DE; nieces, Michelle Ifill Jenkins of New Rochelle, NY, Deidre Ifill Stills of New Milford, NJ, Desiree Ifill Lee of McDonough, GA, and Dr. Samantha Ifill of Brooklyn, NY; nephews, Gregory Ifill of Brooklyn, NY, Hugh Carter and Raymond Carter of St. George, Barbados. She will be missed by her friends, old and new, Ora Lee Black, Monica Earle and family, the family of the late Dr. Howard Essner; Susan and Mitchell Essner, and friends at Newark Senior Center, Active Day, and Gilpin Hall.

A private memorial service will be held at St. Thomas's Episcopal Parish, Newark, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Mary's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org
