Shirley Carozzo Tingley, aged 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
Born in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Shirley was the daughter of Edgar T. Carozzo and Emma Bugliani Carozzo.
Shirley was a strong, independent woman who lived life on her own terms, embracing simplicity and authenticity. Never one for pomp and circumstance, a sentiment beautifully exemplified by her decision to elope with the love of her life, Robert Rodney Tingley, on August 3, 1953. Together, they enjoyed a wonderful 35 years of marriage until Robert’s passing in 1988.
Shirley’s career at Continental American Life Insurance Company spanned 38 years, during which where she rose through the ranks from the typing pool to the Marketing Department, earning the respect of her colleagues with her dedication and professionalism.
Shirley enjoyed bowling and bowled on several leagues over the years. Her main passions though were traveling and bird watching. The beach was her happy place, especially the Outerbanks. She would lay on the beach in the sun reading a book, gathering shells and watching the birds from just after breakfast until dinner time. After retiring, Shirley discovered her passion for birding. With her trusted Swarovski binoculars always close at hand, she became an avid birder and active member of the birding community. Shirley’s birding adventures took her across the United States and beyond, including memorable trips to Iceland, British Columbia, and the Dry Tortugas. Locally, she cherished her time at Conowingo Dam, marveling at the eagles, and at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, where the vibrant bird migrations never failed to captivate her.
She is survived by her daughters, Robin Tingley Jones (Bill) and Carol Lynn Tingley; granddaughters, Lindsay Jones, Erin Jones Bennett (Terry), Adrianna Tingley, Kelly Mattoon; and her sister, Eddie Leo. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Robert, as well as her sisters, Doris Denest and Marlene Giancola.
Her family and friends will remember Shirley for her resilience, adventurous spirit, and her strength of character. Though she preferred intimate gatherings over grand occasions, the memories she created will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In keeping with her wishes, a private service and burial will be held with her family.
Shirley’s memory will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.
